Torch Relay

The start of the Torch Relay is always a clarion call to signal the growing excitement that the Games are coming and for Lausanne 2020 it will be no different.


United States

United States

The United States topped the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning 10 gold and six silver.

The country was particularly dominant in snowboarding with five of the six gold medals on offer going its way. 

Jake Pates triumphed in the men's halfpipe and slopestyle events, while Chloe Kim prevailed in the women's equivalents.

Kim is now the reigning Olympic and world champion in halfpipe following victories at Pyeongchang 2018 and Utah 2019 respectively.

Jake Vedder was the US's other snowboarding gold medallist at Lillehammer 2016 thanks to success in the men's snowboard cross.

Another star performer for the Americans in the Norwegian town was River Radamus, who claimed three of the four men's Alpine skiing gold medals available following wins in the giant slalom, super-G and Alpine combined events.

There was also success for the US courtesy of freestyle skier Birk Irving in the men's halfpipe and the nation's men's ice hockey team. 

In all, the US had 62 competitors in 15 sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, the nation finished 10th in the medal table with two gold, three silver and three bronze.

It was represented by 57 athletes in 15 sports.

The gold medals went the way of snowboarder Ben Ferguson in the men's halfpipe and the luge mixed relay team. 

Ferguson was also a silver medallist in the men's slopestyle, while fellow snowboarder Arielle Gold was the runner-up in the women's halfpipe and women's slopestyle.

Gold has since won world gold, in 2013, and Olympic bronze, at Pyeongchang 2018, in halfpipe.

Among the US's bronze medallists at Incheon 2012 was freestyle skier Aaron Blunck in the men's halfpipe.

In 2019, he became world champion in the same discipline.


Ukraine

Ukraine

Ukraine ranked joint 17th with Romania in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning one gold.

Biathlete Khrystyna Dmytrenko sealed her country's solitary medal with victory in the women's pursuit. 

She became Ukraine's first-ever YOG champion both in biathlon and winter sports.

In all, Ukraine had 23 competitors in nine sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, figure skaters Aleksandra Nazarova and Maxim Nikitin combined to win Ukraine's solitary medal - a silver in the ice dancing event.

The nation was represented by 23 athletes in eight sports.


Turkey

Turkey

Turkey was represented by 13 athletes in six sports at the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer.

The country did not win any medals.

There were also no podium finishes for the nation at Innsbruck 2012, where it was represented by four athletes in three sports.


The Netherlands

The Netherlands

The Netherlands ranked joint 27th with Bulgaria in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning one bronze. 

Speed skater Daan Baks was the country's sole medallist following a third-place finish in the men's 1,500m event.

In all, The Netherlands had 13 competitors in six sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, The Netherlands finished sixth in the medal table with four gold, one silver and two bronze.

Speed skater Sanneke de Neeling won two of the gold medals with victories in the women's 3,000m and mass start events and also claimed silver in the 1,500m competition.

Ice hockey player Julie Zwarthoed came out on top in the women's individual skills challenge, while Marije van Huigenbosch and Sanne Dekker combined to secure the two-woman bobsleigh title.

Overall, The Netherlands was represented by 18 athletes in eight sports.


Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland ranked sixth in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning four gold, three silver and four bronze.

Aline Danioth did the women's slalom-Alpine combined double, while fellow Alpine skier Mélanie Meillard topped the women's giant slalom podium.

Danioth won her first-ever global crown at the 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre in Sweden, helping Switzerland to victory in the nations team event. 

Switzerland's one other winner at Lillehammer 2016 was freestyle skier Talina Gantenbein, in women's ski cross.

In all, Switzerland had 48 competitors in 11 sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, the country finished seventh in the medal table with three gold and five bronze.

Among the trio of gold medallists was Alpine skier Sandro Simonet in the men's slalom.

Simonet, who also added combined and giant slalom bronze to his haul, was part of Switzerland's gold medal-winning team at Åre 2019.

There were also victories for Switzerland at Innsbruck 2012 through freestyle skier Kai Mahler, in the men's halfpipe, and its mixed curling team. 

The nation was represented by 26 athletes in 11 sports.


Sweden

Sweden

Sweden ranked ninth in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning three gold and two silver.

Two of the country's gold medals came in cross-country skiing with Moa Lundgren triumphing in the women's cross-country cross and Johanna Hagström prevailing in the women's sprint.

Sweden also successfully defended their women's ice hockey title from Innsbruck 2012. 

In all, Sweden had 39 competitors in 10 sports.

The nation finished joint 13th in the Innsbruck 2012 medal table with Finland, collecting two gold and two silver. 

Joining the women's ice hockey team in claiming top honours was Alpine skier Magdalena Fjällström, the winner of the women's combined event. 

Sweden was represented by 35 athletes in nine sports.


Spain

Spain

Spain was represented by six athletes in four sports at the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer.

The country did not win any medals.

There were also no podium finishes for the nation at Innsbruck 2012, where it was represented by nine athletes in five sports.


South Korea

South Korea

South Korea ranked second in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning 10 gold, three silver and three bronze.

Five of South Korea's gold medals came in speed skating with Kim Min-seok and Park Ji-woo achieving the respective men's and women's 1,500m-mass start doubles, and Kim Min-sun taking the women's 500m crown.

Kim Min-seok is now a double Olympic medallist and the winner of three Asian Winter Games medals, including two golds.

There was also three victories for South Korea in short track speed skating at Lillehammer 2016.

Among the country's winners was Hwang Dae-heon in the men's 1,000m.

He is now a world champion in the 500m and 5,000m relay and Olympic silver medallist in the 500m having finished runner-up to China's Wu Dajing at Pyeongchang 2018.

The other victors were Hong Kyung-hwan in the men's 500m and Kim Ji-yoo in the women's 1,000m ahead of compatriot Lee Su-youn.

Completing South Korea's gold medal haul was cross-country skier Kim Magnus, who topped the men's 10km and cross-country cross podiums.

He would go onto claim three medals at the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, including sprint gold.

In all, South Korea had 30 competitors in 12 sports at Lillehammer 2016. 

At Innsbruck 2012, the nation finished fourth in the medal table with six gold, three silver and two bronze.

Among the gold medallists was short track speed skater Shim Suk-hee, who has now amassed 10 World Championship gold medals and two Olympic title in the 3,000m relay. 

Shim won the women's 500m and 1,000m crowns in the Austrian city, while fellow short track speed skaters Su Min-yoon and Hyo Jun-lim triumphed in the men's 500m and 1,000m events respectively.

There was also speed skating success for Jang Mi in the women's 500m and 1,500m competitions. 

South Korea was represented by 28 athletes in 12 sports. 


South Africa

South Africa

South Africa was represented by just one athlete at the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer - Alpine skier Rachel Olivier. 

The country did not win any medals.

There were also no podium finishes for the nation at Innsbruck 2012, where Sive Speelman became the first black athlete to represent South Africa at any Winter Olympics.

Speelman was the country's sole representative.


Slovenia

Slovenia

Slovenia ranked 10th in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning three gold and two bronze.

All three of the gold medals came in ski jumping as the country dominated the sport. 

Bor Pavlovčič and Ema Klinec won the respective men's and women's individual events and also joined forces with Vid Vrhovnik to claim the team title. 

In all, Slovenia had 20 competitors in seven sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, the country finished 16th in the medal table with one gold, four silver and two bronze.

Ski jumper Anže Lanišek was the sole gold medallist thanks to victory in the men's individual event.

Slovenia was represented by 21 athletes in nine sports. 


Slovakia

Slovakia

Slovakia ranked joint 24th with Belgium in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning one silver.

Ice hockey player Sebastian Čederle was the country's sole medallist following a second-place finish in the men's individual skills challenge.

In all, Slovakia had 33 competitors in seven sports.

At Innsbruck 2012, Alpine skier Petra Vlhová won the nation's solitary medal, a gold in the women's slalom, for a joint 19th-place finish with Morocco. 

Vlhová now has four World Championship medals to her name, including giant slalom gold, combined silver and slalom bronze in 2019. 

Slovakia was represented at Innsbruck 2012 by 30 athletes in five sports.


Serbia

Serbia

Serbia was represented by three athletes in two sports at the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer - Alpine skiers Rašo Jevremović and Milica Kovačević, and cross-country skier Anja Ilić.

The country did not win any medals.

There were also no podium finishes for the nation at Innsbruck 2012, where it was represented by two athletes in two sports - Alpine skier Strahinja Stanišić and biathlete Dženis Avdić.


San Marino

San Marino

San Marino was represented by just one athlete at the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer - Alpine skier Alessandro Mariotti.

The country did not win any medals.

There were also no podium finishes for the nation at Innsbruck 2012, where it was also represented by one athlete - Alpine skier Vincenzo Michelotti.


Russia

Russia

Russia ranked third in the medal table for the 2016 Winter YOG in Lillehammer, winning seven gold, eight silver and nine bronze. 

Three of the country's gold medals came in figure skating thanks to wins for Ekaterina Borisova and Dmitry Sopot in the pairs, Anastasia Shpilevaya and Grigory Smirnov in ice dancing and Polina Tsurskaya in the women's singles.

Among Russia's other victors was cross-country skier Maya Yakunina in the women's 5km, Evgenii Rukosuev in men's skeleton and freestyle skier Lana Prusakova in women's slopestyle.

There was also success for the nation in the Nordic mixed team event.

In all, Russia had 72 athletes in 15 sports.

At Innsbruck, Russia finished fifth in the medal table with five gold, four silver and seven bronze.

Two of the gold medals were won in figure skating courtesy of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva in the women's singles and Anna Yanovskaya and Sergey Mozgov in ice dancing.

Tuktamysheva went onto become world and European champion in 2015 and triumphed at the previous year's Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Barcelona. 

There were also two cross-country victories for Russia at Innsbruck 2012 with Anastasia Sedova winning the women's 5km classical and Alexsander Selyaninov the men's 10km classical.

Sedova is now a world and Olympic bronze medallist in the 4x5km relay.

Completing Russia's list of gold medallists at Innsbruck 2012 was biathlete Uliana Kaysheva in the women's pursuit.

Among the silver medallists was figure skater Adelina Sotnikova, who would go onto become the women's singles Olympic champion at Sochi 2014.

Overall, Russia was represented by 67 athletes in 15 sports.
