January 9 - Andrea Eskau made it two wins in two days at the IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup in Vuokatti ©Getty Images Germany's Andrea Eskau claimed her second win of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Nordic Skiing World Cup in Vuokatti today, while Ukrainian's Maksym Yarovyi and Oleksandra Kononova also curbed the Russian gold medal charge.

After claiming four of the six gold medals on offer yesterday, Russian athletes had to make do with three on the second day of action in Finland.

Vancouver 2010 silver medallist Eskau upset the Russian applecart yesterday with a win in the women's middle distance cross country race and she finished on top of the podium again today in the sitting short freestyle competition ahead of Maria Iovleva and Norway's Mariann Marthinsen, who picked up three wins last time out in Canmore.

Russia had to make do with another silver in the men's sitting race as Aliaksandr Davidovich could not overhaul Ukrainian Yarovyi while bronze went to Japan's Kozo Kubo.

Gold medal number two for Ukraine came in the form of women's standing race winner Kononova, who also picked up her second gold of the meeting following her victory in the classic race yesterday.

She was joined on the podium by compatriot Iuliia Batenkova, who repeated her performance from the first day with both Ukrainians being split by Russia's Anna Milenina.

Normal service resumed in the remaining events as Russian skiers claimed all three sets of medals.

The men's standing race was won by Vancouver 2010 bronze medallist Vladimir Kononov, who finished narrowly ahead of Rushan Minnegulov and reigning cross country sprint world champion Vladislav Lekomtcev.

In the men's visually impaired (VI) event, the podium from yesterday's middle distance race was replicated as once again Stanislav Choklaev and guide Maksim Pirogov led home compatriots Nikolay Polukhin and his guide Andrey Tokarev while Alexsander Artemov, guided by Ilya Cherepanov, finished third.

In what was the most exciting race of the day, the battle of reigning world champions was won by long distance champion Elena Remizova and guide Natalia Yakimova who crossed the line less than a second clear of sprint world champion Mikhalina Lysova and guide Alexey Ivanov.

Iuliia Budaleeva and guide Tatiana Maltseva completed the podium.

Tomorrow is a rest day in Vuokatti before the short and pursuit biathlon events take place on Saturday (January 11).
