December 4 - Canadian captain Greg Westlake led by example by bagging three goals against the USA in Toronto ©BongartsHosts Canada delighted the home crowd at Toronto's MasterCard Centre as they overcame arch rivals the United States 4-1 in the World Sledge Hockey Challenge thanks to a star performance from hat-trick man and captain Greg Westlake.

After a competition rest day yesterday, the 27-year-old was in scintillating form and proved too much to handle for the visitor's defence, helping himself to three goals in the match which was a repeat of this year's World Championship Pool-A final in Goyang where the Maple Leafs also emerged victorious.

Scoring got underway in the first period thanks to a strike from Tyler McGregor after five minutes and that was followed by two Westlake efforts that left the hosts leading by three after the first period.

Neither goaltender was beaten in the second period as the US came back into the game and early in the third they pulled a goal back through Alexi Salamone to strengthen hopes of a comeback.

Any thoughts the Paralympic champions had of hauling in the Canadians were put to bed following another strike from Westlake to complete his hat-trick.

"We got off to a real good start, had a great first period," said Canadian head coach Mike Mondin.

"The second period the Americans pushed back and then in the third period they came at us pretty hard but we weathered the storm."

Westlake was happy to have bagged three goals but was concerned by how his side allowed their opponents back into the game instead of closing it out.

"It's a frustrating game for the team and it's kind of a mixed game for me as captain," he said.

"I'm happy with the stats and the hat-trick, but I'm not pleased that we didn't play a good 45 minutes.

"We've got to get a lot better."

Despite Westlake's three-goal haul, he was not the top-scorer on the day as in the earlier match Nikolay Terentyev tore through the South Korean rearguard on the way to notching four goals in a 9-1 win for the Russians.

A Jong-Ho Jang strike for South Korea did little to stem the tide against a rampant Russia with Dmitry Lisov also starring with four assists while Mikhail Ivanov in the Russian goal was only called into action five times throughout the contest.

That win for Russia sets up a semi-final clash with the US while the South Koreans have the daunting task of trying to overcome the unbeaten Canadians.

Both games will take place tomorrow with the medal matches scheduled for Saturday (December 7).
