Canada was chosen to stage the Championships in London last September but a host city was not confirmed at the time.

But following negotiations between the IPC and Swimming Canada, it has been announced by both today that Montreal's Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex (pictured top) will stage the event.

The venue, which has previously hosted major events including the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships, features three outdoor pools but Swimming Canada plan to build a temporary structure around the eight-lane competition pool to effectively turn it into an indoor venue.

The event is due to be staged from August 11 to 17.

"We are very excited about Montreal staging the IPC Swimming World Championships as it is a city with an excellent track record for staging major international sporting events," said IPC chief executive Xavier Gonzalez.

"Many of the swimmers who competed at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, breaking 148 world records, will compete in Montreal.

"Just like in London I expect them to thrill spectators and TV viewers around the globe with their sensational performances.

"This Championship will give the Canadian public a good taste of elite level para-swimming ahead of the 2015 Parapan American Games that will be staged in Toronto."


The event will be the first major gathering of international athletes since the London 2012 Paralympics with around 650 of the world's best swimmers from 50 countries set to be in attendance.

Amongst the headlines names are expected to be Brazil's Daniel Dias, America's Jessica Long, Britain's Ellie Simmonds and Australia' Jacqueline Freney, who all won multiple gold medals in the pool at London 2012.

"Bringing this event to the site of the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships at the beautiful Parc Jean-Drapeau is bringing the world to Canada," said Swimming Canada chief executive Pierre Lafontaine.

"It helps inspire, develop and sell sport for people with disabilities across our nation."

The last IPC Swimming World Championships took place in August 2010 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands where Ukraine topped the medal table ahead of the United States and Russia who finished in second and third respectively.
