John Twomey_Anthony_Hegarty_and_Ian_Costello_12-01-12January 12 - After a slow start, the Irish trio of John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello (pictured) are beginning to impressed at the International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) World Championships at Laishley Park Marina in Florida as winds picked up to 14 knots.


Ireland's sailing team made the best of the conditions and are currently tied atop the Sonar class with Aleksander Wang-Hansen, Marie Solberg and Per Eugen Kristiansen of Norway, while France's Bruno Jourdren, Eric Flageul and Nicolas Vimont-Vicary are just a point back in third.

Twomey topped the fleet in the first race, but dropped to third and sixth, while Wang-Hansen hung on to second ahead of Jourdren with a second place finish in the final race.

The French team took first in the third race to slip past Britain's John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas.

Meanwhile in the SKUD class, Jennifer French and Jean-Paul Creignou of the United States and Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell of Britain battled for the top two spots all day, going 1-2 in all three races.

The Americans claimed a one-point lead clinching two wins compared to the one win from Rickman and Birrell.

Hagar Zehavi and Shimon Ben Yakov of Israel took third with Scott Whitman and Julia Dorsett of the US in fourth.

Elsewhere, the three-time defending world champion and top-ranked 2.4mR sailor Thierry Schmitter shook off a slow start to vault to the top of the 2.4mR leader board.

The Dutch star won the final race of the day to claim victory while Heiko Kröger went second in the final race.

He finished two points ahead of Marc Leblanc of the United States.

Eleven races are scheduled in total for each class.
