Oscar Pistorius arrives for the start of a new week at his murder trial, which began with his evidence coming under close scrutiny ©Getty ImagesApril 14 - Oscar Pistorius is "inventing" evidence and using his emotions "as an escape", his murder trial has heard.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel accused the six-time Paralympic gold medallist of "tailoring" his testimony to "fit the state's case".

Spending a sixth day in the witness box in Pretoria, the 27-year-old broke down and later vomited when Nel told him: "You fired at Reeva.

"You fired at her."

Pistorius, in tears, responded: "I did not fire at Reeva."

The court was briefly adjourned to allow Pistorius to compose himself.

He denies deliberately killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkmap on February 14 last year.

She was hit by three bullets when Pistorius fired through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home.

Pistorius says he thought there was an intruder inside the toilet.

Attempting to highlight apparent inconsistencies in Pistorius' testimony, Nel once again went through the events of that night.

He pressed Pistorius on his claims that he told Steenkamp in a "low tone" to "get down and phone the police" on hearing a noise.

Nel said he had stated he "whispered" to Steenkamp in a statement that formed part of his bail application last year.

"I must have made a mistake," Pistorius told the court.

"I was traumatised at the bail hearing."

Nel, once again, also asked how he did not realise Steenkmap had got out of bed to go to the toilet, and why she did not respond to him shouting as he approached the door.

He told the court Pistorius fired at Steenkamp as they argued, which the athlete denied.

Towards the end of the day's proceedings, Nel told Pistorius: "You're getting emotional now because you're getting frustrated because your version [of events] is improbable."

As well as a charge of murder, Pistorius faces charges of illegally firing a gun in public and of illegally possessing ammunition, both of which he denies.
