Briton Peacock won his first World Championship title in the T44 100 metres in 10.99sec.

Despite a poor start, the 20-year-old just held off the challenge of Americans Richard Browne and Jerome Singleton, who finished second and third respectively.

Browne had broken Peacock's world record in the semi-finals yesterday, running 10.83 while Singleton was looking to defend the title he won in Christchurch two years ago.

"I'm probably the luckiest guy in the world, because I shouldn't have won like that," said Peacock.

"At the end of the day it's about getting through the rounds and the final.

"It doesn't matter what you run in the rounds, you've got to run it in the final.

"It's about positions not times in Championships."


Brazilian Oliveira also set a new Championship record of 10.80 on his way to adding the T42 100m to the 200m he won earlier in the tournament, with another US pair finishing second and third in the form of Blake Leeper and Joshua Kennison.

Oliveira's compatriots completed a clean sweep of the medals in the women's T11 100m following the disqualification of Angola's Esperanca Gicaso for a false start.

That left the three Brazilian sprinters to fight it out for gold and it was defending champion Terezhina Guilhermina who prevailed in a time of 12.16 ahead of Jerusa Santos and Jhulia Santos to replicate the final podium at London 2012.

Richard Whitehead from Britain came out on top in the other big sprint showdown of the day as he left it late to see off the challenge of Australia's Scott Reardon and Germany's Heinrich Popow.

Paralympic champion Whitehead crossed the line in a time of 24.95 after passing Reardon with 20m to go to retain his T42 200m crown.


American Raymond Martin added another world title to his collection by overcoming Mexico's Salvador Hernandez in the T52 100m to claim his third gold medal following wins in the 800m and 1500m.

Another US athlete also completed a hat-trick of wins in Lyon as Tatyana McFadden clocked 1min 44:44secs setting a world record on her way to victory in the T54 800m.

The 24-year-old beat the previous record of 1:45.19 held by the legendary Chantal Petitclerc of Canada to add to the 200m and 5,000m already in the bag at these Championships.

"It's unbelievable," said McFadden, who also hopes to medal in the 100m, 400m and 1,500m races coming up.

"It was really tough but I was confident in my training and I trusted myself.

"The support from fans has been helpful as well.

"I am quite positive for the 100m even though it is going to be such a competitive race once again."

The US team now leads the medal count after four days of action with 26 medals, followed by Russia on 24.

South Korean Min Jae Jeon prevailed in the women's T36 200m ahead of Claudia Nicoleitzik of Germany.

El Amin Chentouf of Tunisia completed the T12 5,000m and 10,000m double in emphatic style finishing almost two full laps ahead of nearest challenger Nacer-Eddine Karfas of Algeria to set a world record time of 29:38:85 in the 10,000m.


Brazil's Odair Santos also completed a Championship double adding the T11 800m title to the 5,000m crown he won on Sunday (July 21).

Paralympic champion Hongzhuan Zhou of China added the women's T53 800m World Championship title to her collection after finishing ahead of Australians Angela Ballard and Madison de Rozario.

In the track qualifying events home favourite Mandy Francois-Elie eased through to the final of the T37 100m final as she looks to add to the 200m world crown she won on Monday (July 22).

Brazil's Veronica Hipolito set a world record time of 13:19 in the semi-finals of the women's T38 100m, while Britain's Libby Clegg qualified fastest in the T12 100m.

Defending champions Russia won the 4x100m relay T11-13 once again, with the US clinching silver and hosts France winning bronze.

Away from the track, two new world records were set while another was equalled in a great day of action.

In the F46 shot put Russia's Paralympic champion Nikita Prokhorov beat his own world record with a throw of 15:69 metres while in the F52/53 shot put Aigars Apinis of Latvia retained his title with a world record equalling throw of 10:23m.

Another world record was set by Germany's Birgit Kober in the women's F33/34 javelin as a throw of 27:45m saw her defend the title she won in Christchurch, while Mexico's Estela Salas took gold in the women's F52/53 javelin.

South African Reinhardt Hamman prevailed in the men's F37/38 javelin with a throw of 45.72m while the roles were reversed in the F11 javelin as Venezuela's Anibal Bello threw 46.17m to condemn defending champion Vitalii Telesh to the silver medal position occupied by Bello two years ago.

Britain's Paralympic champion Aled Davies added the men's F42 shot put title to the discus title he won earlier in the Championships with a throw of 47.62m which was more than six metres clear of the rest of the field.


It was a German one-two in the women's F54/55/56 discus as multi-Paralympic champion Marianne Buggenhagen finished ahead of compatriot Martina Willing who had won gold in the F55/56/57 shot put on day two of the Championships.

A personal best of 5:92m saw Russian Nikol Rodomakina win gold in the women's F46 long jump while another personal best by Dmytro Prudnikov of the Ukraine, who jumped 7.15m in the men's F20 long jump, was enough to secure victory ahead of London 2012 medallists Zoran Talic of Croatia and Lenine Cunha of Portugal.

In the women's T44 long jump competition The Netherland's Iris Pruysen became world champion with Marie-Amelie Le Fur of France in second place and bronze going to Japan's Mami Sato.

The IPC Athletics World Championships are due to continue through to July 28.
