Cheered on by a raucous home support, which included the key figure behind the UK's first ever multi-sport event for sick, wounded and injured service personnel, Prince Harry, the British contingent scored late to edge United States 13-12 and claim a brilliant gold medal.

The teams were tied at 7-7 come the halfway mark and it took a late surge by Charles Walker to give the hosts the victory with just 16 seconds left on the clock, much to the delight of a passionate home crowd.

Denmark were the winners of the bronze in the wheelchair rugby as they surged to a 13-8 victory over Australia.

The gold and bronze medal finals were sandwiched in between a celebrity match which included members of each national team, as well as the likes of rugby stars Johnny Wilkinson and Mike Tindall, Olympic champions Dame Kelly Holmes and Denise Lewis and Royal cousins Zara Phillips and Prince Harry.

It was not just in the wheelchair rugby that the home team impressed with Britain's forces securing gold in three of the six archery competitions on the second day of the Games.

David Hubber began the medal streak as he led a British clean sweep in the mixed individual recurve.

The Briton beat team mate Gary Prout 6-0 in the gold medal final, while Steven Gill defeated The Netherlands' Roger Hack 6-1 in the bronze medal encounter.

"I couldn't have done it without Paddy [Silver medallist Gary Prout]," said Hubber.

"He's been my inspiration.

"There was a lot of pressure in the arena and weirdly I was just chuckling to myself.

"I don't know why, but when I won, I mean wow, the place was just buzzing, it's been amazing."

Hubber and Prout later teamed up with Gavin Watson to seal victory in the mixed team recurve contest, beating The Netherland's in the final, with Michael Hall, Carl Harding and Andrew Phillips combined to seal a further gold for the hosts in the mixed team compound competition.

Despite tasting defeat in the final of the mixed team recurve contest, United States' Richard Burkett had reason to cheer in the discipline's individual event as he beat Canada's Luc Martin to seal gold at Here East.

Italy's Fabio Tomasulo won the final individual gold medal in the archery when he beat Great Britain's Paul Twaites in the final, before Denmark's trio of Christian Richardson, Finn Sennik Jenson and Michael Thiim Sorenson recorded the last victory of the day with mixed team novice gold against Australia.

The inaugural Invictus Games continues tomorrow with three sports packed into a busy session across the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as road cycling, wheelchair basketball and indoor rowing get underway.
