ABC coverage of London 2012 ParalympicsApril 29 - Broadcast rights to the Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 Paralympics are set to be sold to the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC), who would then be able to on-sell them to local companies.

The deal, which would also include the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships for athletics and swimming, is expected to cost the APC approximately $400,000 (£267,000/€316,000).

APC chief executive Jason Hellwig told the Financial Review in Australia that the contract with the IPC would include free-to-air, pay television, radio and digital rights and the organisation would appoint an agent to handle the on-selling.

"We will look to make a profit, with the funds obviously helping us send our teams away," said Hellwig.

"But the key is to do something that is of high quality...broadcasters will get access to the athletes and be able to build stories around them."

London 2012 was broadcast on ABC, Australia's national public broadcaster, and was introduced by Adam Hills and sports presenter, Stephanie Brantz.

More than 100 hours were shown, mainly on its digital channel, ABC2, including both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Australia enjoyed its best Paralympic performance overseas since Atlanta 1996 when they finished fifth overall with a total of 85 medals, 32 of them gold, including a record eight for swimmer Jacqueline Freney.

Hellwig last week criticised Ten Network's plan to broadcast only four multi-class races from the swimming national titles, claiming it was a "token gesture".

He added: ''It's about valuing properly an asset that everyone knows is a terrific one.

"The support the Paralympic swimmers got in London last year was absolutely unambiguous.''

Hellwig hopes that ABC would be interested in buying the broadcast rights off the APC to broadcast Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016.

"We're in advanced negotiations with the APC, however we don't have a deal fully agreed or signed yet by all parties concerned," IPC spokesman Craig Spence told insidethegames.
