UNEP_March_7_logoMarch 6 - A particular need to preserve the natural features of the Imeretinskaya Valley and its coastal area before the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games has been highlighted during a visit by representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Other topics discussed with the Organising Committee included the preservation of sections of the Achipse and Laura Rivers - situated within the Olympic Venues construction site - and the preservation of the cultural and environmental legacy.

The event was attended by representatives of the regional environmental protection group Environmental Watch on North Caucasus, the independent environmental protection organisation Psou, the European Green Party and the Sochi division of the Russian Geographic Society.

Coastline between Chernomorets and Energia, sand seashore-growing vegetation and ponds and swamps of the Psou river are natural landmarks in the Imeretinskaya Valley and are under the protection of the Bucharest and Ramsar Conventions.

Information relating to the natural features of the valley was provided to UNEP's representatives with a request that it must be included in Sochi's "green zone".

All the information relating to the initiative will be made available on the UNEP website.
