sochi-2014-logo1May 16 - Sochi 2014 has announced it will unveil the medals for next year's Winter Olympics and Paralympics at this month's SportAccord International Convention, taking place in St Petersburg.

The medals will be presented at a ceremony conducted by Sochi 2014 President and chief executive Dmitry Chernyshenko, key athletes and public figures during the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board Meeting at the event, which is one of the world's biggest gatherings of top sports and Olympic officials, on May 30.

And the Organising Committee promises medals that are altogether different from anything that has been released before for previous Games.

"A record number of events will be contested in Sochi, therefore a record number of medals – about 1,300 – will be minted," Sochi 2014 said in a statement.

"Sochi medals will have a unique design, different from all previous editions of the Olympic Games, underlining the originality and distinctiveness of Russia."

The Olympics, are due  take place on February 7 until 23, will feature 15 disciplines of seven winter sports, namely biathlon; bobsleigh – bobsleigh and skeleton; curling; ice hockey; luge; skating - figure skating, short track speed skating and speed skating; and skiing - alpine, cross country, nordic combined, ski jumping, freestyle and snowboard.

Meanwhile, the Paralympics, taking place on March 7 until 16, will include events in the five winter sports of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, ice sledge hockey and wheelchair curling.

Russia's largest jewellery manufacturer, Adamas, will produce the medals.
