Taro AsoJuly 3 - Japan used today's presentation by Tokyo 2020 to International Olympic Committee (IOC) members to announce a new Government programme including a promise of more support for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Tarō Asō (pictured top), Japan's Deputy Prime Minister and a skeet shooting competitor at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, said the Sport for Tomorrow initiative would see the creation of an international sports academy based in Japan, along with extra backing for WADA's anti-doping efforts.

The move is likely to be much appreciated by the Montreal-based body, whose chairman, John Fahey, warned last week that WADA would be forced to scale back its activities if Governments were not prepared to stump up more cash.

IOC members said they were impressed by the technical qualities of Tokyo's presentation, which finished after 45 minutes on the dot.

Some also commented on the bid's "occidental" feel.

This was contributed in part by the presence on the platform of Christel Takigawa, a Paris-born television announcer.

Takigawa delivered one of the presentation's best-remembered lines, parodying one of rival Istanbul's key strengths with the claim that Tokyo was the place where east and west meet.

The event also featured one of bid chief executive Masato Mizuno's now keenly anticipated jokes.

Taking over the microphone after a video of scenic Tokyo, Mizuno commented how there were so many things in his "magnificent city" that were worth taking pictures of.

He then whipped out a camera and took a snapshot of his august and attentive audience, in a gesture that was positively received during what was a long day for IOC members.

Switching to a more serious tone, Mizuno – who has attended every Games since 1976 – said Tokyo had "learnt a whole lot" since its unsuccessful bid for the 2016 Games.

"We have kept the best and improved the rest," he said.
