The sailors, silver medallists in the 470 at London 2012, were approached by two men wielding knives while on their way back to their hotel.

After being pushed around, the pair were robbed of all of their belongings, including the training gear used during the day's session.

"Back in Rio for two weeks training," the pair revealed on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

"Top News Today: WE'VE BEEN MUGGED - Humph.!"

The pair later elaborated on their ordeal.

"Our delightful walk back from the sailing club to the hotel turned fairly nasty when two guys wielding seven inch knives ran at us, pushed us around and grabbed everything we had," they said. 

"Along with the things that were actually worth something, the most annoying thing right now is our lycra we were sailing in got taken...unbelievable!!

"Anyway, we made it back to the hotel slightly shaken but all ok...looking forward to what tomorrow brings."

Mills and Clark won bronze at the 2014 World Championships in Santander, Spain, which qualified their boat for Rio 2016.

The pair have also won world gold and silver medals in 2012 and 2011 respectively.
