A delegated led by Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) President Carlos Nuzman travelled to London to participate in a signing ceremony with Gwyn Miles, Director of Somerset House Trust.

The signing ceremony was held in The Portico Room in Somerset House, and was also attended by a number of invited guests from the partner organisations.

The signing of the agreement between the COB, Rio 2016 and Somerset House marks the first official announcement by a National Olympic Committee regarding the selection of its "Olympic House" for the 2012 Games in London.

With Rio following London as the next host of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016, Casa Brasil will be a focal point during the 2012 Games, and Somerset House offers a beautiful setting to showcase real Brazilian experiences and culture, and provides the ideal venue to celebrate the nation’s sporting achievements.

Nuzman said: "The Brazilian Olympic Committee and Rio 2016 are delighted that Casa Brasil will be hosted by the prestigious Somerset House during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Casa Brasil in London marks a significant moment in our journey towards the 2016 Games in Rio and we look forward to contributing to Olympic London with a full celebration of Brazilian culture and sport."



Somerset House is situated on the south side of the Strand in central London, overlooking the River Thames, just east of Waterloo Bridge.

The current building dates back to 1776, although a building had been there for two centuries previously and in the 17th century the house was used as a residence by the Queens of James I, Charles I and Charles II.

Miles said: "We are really thrilled to be welcoming the Brazilian Olympic Committee to Somerset House as their London home; Casa Brasil in 2012.

"We’re now looking forward to working together on a cultural programme that captures and celebrates the country’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, and showcasing the best of Brazil in the heart of London."
