August 18 - Westfield today confirmed a September 2011 opening for the £690 million ($1.45 billion) Stratford City shopping centre, next to the Olympic Park in London.



 The centre will cover 1.9 million sq ft, making it the largest urban shopping centre in Europe.

In its half year results statement, released today, the Australian developer revealed that "project delivery is well on track" and that 70 per cent of space is now "leased or committed as the leasing strategy continues to gain momentum".

Anchor John Lewis will open a 240,000 sq ft store there, Waitrose has taken a 32,000 shop and Marks & Spencer has signed a 200,000 sq ft store.

The centre has room for 300 retailers and a 12-screen cinema.

Westfield also have planning permission to construct 1.1 million square feet of office space and is building 130,000 sq ft of that by 2012.

There are two hotels, one Premier Inn with 267 beds and another, with 350 beds, with a soon-to-be-announced hotelier.
