Sir Robert McAlpine, the original Olympic Stadium builders, are among those in the running for the job, building.co.uk reported today.

They are vying for the contract, which was advertised last December, with Balfour Beatty, ISG, Buckingham Group and Shepherd Construction. 

Mace has already been appointed as project and programme manager for the work while Buro Happold is structural engineer and the architect is Populous, reported building.co.uk.

The Olympic Stadium, which it was officially announced last Friday (March 22) that West Ham will move into in time for the 2016-2017 season, is due to be converted in a 54,000 capacity multi-use arena, hosting other big events, including matches in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2017 World Athletics Championships. 


The most high-profile aspects of the conversion are set to include a new roof and the introduction of retractable and reloctable seating, which will enable football fans to sit above the existing running track and close to the field of play.

The existing roof is set to be removed and replaced with one double the size which will be transparent to ensure daylight reaches the football pitch and athletics track.

The total cost of the conversion work is expected to be £160 million ($260 million/€200 million).
