The London Mayor will replace Daniel Moylan, who replaced the popular Baroness Margaret Ford only three months ago.

"Securing the future of the Olympic and Paralympic legacy and building on the regeneration of East London is a matter of huge importance to me personally," said Johnson.

"It is vital that I continue to be at the forefront of the decision-making, driving forward the huge task of delivery.

"The chairmanship of the LLDC will enable me to do just that, building on what has already been achieved."

Moylan has been moved to spearhead a new aviation policy unit set-up by Johnson.

"Daniel Moylan is a gifted politician with a superb brain," said Johnson.

"I've asked Daniel to take on one of the most important challenges of my second term [as Mayor], the vital task of driving our aviation policy.

"London is the heartbeat of the UK's economy.

"We must remain competitive, and to do that we need a coherent aviation strategy for 21st century London.

"Daniel Moylan will help me deliver that.

"Throughout the incredibly busy Olympic and Paralympic Games, Daniel has shown great insight and determination in driving my legacy agenda and I'd like to thank him for his immense contribution."

Boris Johnson was a popular figure during London 2012 and now he has taken over as chairman of the company charged with ensuring the Olympic legacy

The LLDC took over from the Olympic Park Legacy Company following a proposal from Johnson in January.

Since then several senior figures have left.

Apart from Ford, the chief executive Andrew Altman also decided to step down and has been replaced on a temporary basis by Dennis Hone, who has combined the role with the same one at the Olympic Delivery Authority. 

Top of the agenda for Johnson will be finally securing the future of the Olympic Stadium, for which there are four bidders.

They are Premier League West Ham United, League One side Leyton Orient, Intelligent Transport Services in association with Formula One, and UCFB College of Football Business.

"I have had the huge privilege of chairing the Legacy Corporation for the last three months, working with its dedicated staff and getting to know the fantastic, enthusiastic and wonderful people of Stratford and the nearby areas," said Moylan.

"I give up the post with a heavy heart, but knowing that, alongside aviation, the Mayor intends to make this one of the great priorities of his second term and is demonstrating this by taking the chairmanship of the Legacy Corporation himself.

"London is moving east and Stratford and the surrounding areas have a wonderful future."
