Hörmann, 53, has been head of the German Skiing Federation (DSV) since 2005 and will succeed Bach, who stood down after replacing Jacques Rogge as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in September.

Hörmann, who was the only candidate, received 434 votes from 459 delegates at the General Assembly in Wiesbaden for a one-year term in charge of the DOSB.

A vote for another four-year term is due to take place in December 2014.

"I realise that the tasks ahead of us do not match the format of a 100-metres run," said Hörmann, a member of the International Ski Federation's ruling Council

"A marathon is a better picture.

"But I'm ready to tackle this marathon."

Bach, who led the DOSB for seven years before leaving to take the IOC's top job, was elected as Honorary President.

"This is another emotional moment for me," Bach told the delegates.

"I am really happy with this choice and this great approval.

"Equip your new President with a strong mandate that will allow him to represent our DOSB with all his strength.

"Support him as you have supported me over the past seven years."

Hörmann leads the Hörmann Holding, a group of companies offering technology services with 3,500 employees, 25 subsidiaries and annual sales of €590 million (£500 million/$807 million), which makes him financially independent, an important consideration as the DOSB role is as an unpaid volunteer.

Hörmann will replace Hans-Peter Kraemer, who had served as interim President but was not interested in the job on a permanent basis.
