After his formal resignation, Bach travelled from Frankfurt to Lausanne where he will tomorrow officially take over as the new President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following a handover with Jacques Rogge, the man he is succeeding.

Bach had led the DOSB since it was founded in 2006 following a merger of the Deutscher Sportbund (DSB), and the Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland (NOK).

"They were seven wonderful years full of emotional moments and great challenges," said Bach.

"My thanks to my colleagues for their constructive cooperation and the 98 member organisations of the DOSB for their support."

Hans-Peter Kraemer will step up from being Thomas Bach's deputy at the DOSB to complete the rest of his term

Kraemer, 72, former chairman of the Cologne District Savings Bank, had previously acted as Bach's deputy at the DOSB and was in charge of business and finance.

"Our thanks go to the DOSB founding President Thomas Bach," said Kraemer.

"Under Thomas Bach the DOSB had a big profile and to helped establish it as a socio-political force.

"We are convinced that he continue the successful work of Jacques Rogge as IOC President, with the athletes at the heart of his actions."

Kraemer will serve out the remainder of Bach's term until December 2014 unless early elections are called for December this year.

The DOSB's General Assembly is due to take place on December 7.

As reported by insidethegames yesterday, Bach also resigned a number of other positions today, including as head of Ghorfa, the Arab-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which some Jewish groups claim is anti-Israeli.

Bach is also relinquishing his position on the court of appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, he announced.
