As the centre piece for the 2015 European Games, the Baku National Stadium will become a global icon for sporting stadia across the world.

The multi-functional venue will have a capacity of 65,000 when it is completed in February.

Designed to host football matches and athletic meets is located just to the north of the Athletes' Village.

During Baku 2015 it will host athletics competitions as well as both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Construction started on the venue on June 6, 2011 after President Ilham Aliyev and FIFA and UEFA Presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini attended the ground-breaking ceremony.
