CERMI believe that the Olympic and Paralympic Games provide a great opportunity for a city and a country to help people with disabilities and the organisation articulates this view to the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) in a letter.

"As the body representing disability in Spain, we pledge our support for the Olympic and Paralympic games, the two greatest global sporting events in the world, to return to Spain and specifically the city of Madrid," said the letter.

"These events could provide a huge boost to disabled people across Spain.

"Not only do the Games promote people with a disability and what they can achieve, they also lead to the investment into infrastructure creating more disability access.

"This would result in an improvement of living conditions of people with disabilities."

Madrid will undoubtedly be grateful of the support with their 2020 bid having been plagued with financial problems from the outset.

Madrid's new Mayor, Ana Botella, promised this week that the city's bid to host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics will not be affected by the economic crisis that is currently harming Spain.

Madrid's debt currently stands at €6.3 billion (£5.2 billion/$8.2 billion).
