May 12 - Olympic canoeing gold medallist Tim Brabants (pictured) is to return to the Great Britain team after 18 months away from the sport to qualify with ease for his first international competitions since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The 33-year-old from Chertsey took time away from the sport after he claimed gold in the K1 1000 metres and bronze in the K1 500m to concentrate on his career in medicine.

Brabants made his long awaited return to the side at the British Selection Regatta in Nottingham last weekend where he looked tremendous in qualifying for both World Cup 2 in Szeged, Hungary, on May 21 until 23 and World Cup 3 in Duisburg, Germany on June 4 until 6.

Brabants is now set to compete in the K1 1000m at the two World Cup events although he will also be competing in the K1 5000m in Szeged and the K1 500m in Duisburg.

Brabants, who only returned to full-time training in February, said: "It is fantastic to be back and I’m feeling even better than I did at the Beijing 2008 Olympics which is obviously a great sign.

"We have some real depth in this team now which is really good heading into the World Cup and looking ahead to London 2012."

Results from the two World Cup fixtures will help determine the British squad for the European Championships in Spain this June and World Championships which will take place in Poland in August.
