May 2 - Beth Tweddle (pictured) today defended her two European individual titles to confirm her status as a major hope of a British gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Tweddle first beat Russia's Aliya Mustafina to the uneven bars gold medal on Sunday, drawing huge cheers from her home support at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

Then the 25-year-old reverted to her strongest event, the floor, where she maintained her status as world and European champion.

Tweddle's efforts take Britain's tally to seven senior medals over the past two weeks, including team silver last night.

She now has five months before the World Championships in Rotterdam, but the City of Liverpool athlete only has one focus on her mind.

"I'm still getting results but an Olympic medal is the only reason I'm carrying on," said Tweddle, who registered a superb score of 15.875 on the bars.

She was the World and European champion in 2006 and finished fourth at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but she fell as she attempted to reclaim the world title in London last October.

Tweddle was able to put that disappointment behind her and put in an excellent display today to win comfortably from Mustafina and Ukraine's Nataliya Kononenko.

She said: "I've got so much to look back over my career and be happy with, but my one aim is an Olympic medal."

Tweddle then took her second gold on the floor, to the delight of a partisan crowd.

She was 0.500 better than her nearest rival as she danced and tumbled her way to a second European title.

Anna Myzdrikova of Russia took silver while the bronze went to Romania's Diana Maria Chelaru.

Tweddle said: "It's been an emotional roller coaster.

"Last night we had the team silver and it's hard to bring yourself down and focus on today.

"I just had to keep my head down and do exactly what I've been doing in the gym and luckily I think with the experience I was able to bring on board, I was able to come out today and do the job.

"Now I'll go back to the hotel with the team and celebrate the team's success as well as my own."
