April 14 - Former Australia swimming coach Alan Thompson (pictured) has been cleared by an independent investigation of undisclosed "inappropriate behaviour," the sport's national governing body said today.

Swimming Australia said the probe found no evidence to back anonymous allegations of misconduct arising from a conference on the Gold Coast in 2007.

The four-month long investigation was led by  Louise Donohoe, SC

"There was no evidence found to support the allegation of inappropriate behaviour made against Mr. Thompson, as alleged in an anonymous letter referred to Swimming Australia through media sources whilst he was national head coach," it said in a statement.

"This matter is now closed and Swimming Australia will be making no further comment on the investigation."

Under Thompson, Australia's team won 20 medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, including six gold, to finish second overall in the medals table behind the United States.

Leigh Nugent was appointed head coach last month after acting in the role since Thompson stepped down in December, pending the probe's outcome.

Thompson, once a target for British Swimming to lead them into the London 2012 Olympics, accepted a redundancy package in January after Swimming Australia reduced his powers by splitting the positions of head coach and high performance general manager.

Swimming Australia has not released details of the alleged misconduct.
