April 3 - Hannah Miley tonight stormed to her second gold medal of the meeting in the final of 400 metres individual medley to close the British Gas Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on a high. 



The final day of the Championships saw Britain’s best battling it out for the remaining places on the European Championships and 19-year-old Scot secured her spot in style.

The British record holder touched the wall in a season’s best 4min 37.05sec ahead of Aimee Willmott who finished in 4:41.90 and Keri-Anne Payne who secured bronze in a time 4:43.17.

Miley said: "It’s a tough event to do on the last day.

"I’m just going to continue with my training and look towards the Scottish [Commonwealth Games] trials."

In the men’s 50m freestyle, Simon Burnett piped Adam Brown to the as he secured in a season’s best 22.53sec.

Brown, who won gold in the 100m Freestyle earlier in the week ahead of Burnett, picked up silver in 22.62 while the bronze went to Grant Turner in a season’s best 22.95.

Burnett said: "I’m pleased with that.

"Unfortunately this meet hasn’t gone exactly as I hoped but Adam and Grant are great swimmers so it’s all good for our team."

Ellen Gandy, who picked up two silver medals earlier in the week over 50m and 100m, finally took the gold that had eluded her all week in the 200m butterfly final in a time of 2:07.70.

Jemma Lowe finished a close second in 2:08.21 while bronze went to Alys Thomas of in a personal best of 2:11.54.

Gandy said: "The 200m is the most tactical race that I do.

"I can’t go out too fast I’ve just got to swim my own race and that’s what I was able to do."

Amongst the rest of nights victors’ were Michael Jamieson who won the men’s 200m breaststroke final in 2:11.14 and David Fogg who captured gold in the men’s 1,500m freestyle in 15:18.73.

Fogg said: "It’s always my plan to finish a race strong.

"My main focus now is the open water and Commonwealth Games."
