The 27-year-old had claimed the bronze medal in the -73 kg category in Beijing but had moved to Moscow after the Games following a row over lack of support in Tajikistan despite being given the country's Medal of Honour and a bonus of $2,300 (£1,437).

Boqiyev had been training at the Smabo-70 Club in Moscow and working as a taxi driver to support himself financially.

He had claimed earlier this year that Tajikistan's Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs had failed to work out a proper plan for him to prepare for the London Olympics and had cut his funding and refused to send him on a training trip to South Korea.

"After such a treatment, I have come to the conclusion that Tajikistan is not interested in me as sportsman and I am forced to participate in competitions on behalf of other country," he had said before leaving for Russia.

The conclusion to the row has come just in time for Tajikistan as Boqiyev, who had also won the bronze medal in the 2007 World Championships, had recently been granted Russian citizenship and in October won the country's national championships.

Afterwards he said: "This year, I have been granted the Russian citizenship and I think my dream to win the Olympic Games has become realistic. 

"In Russia, there are more opportunities to achieve this goal.

"I think my choice is right and I will be able to win the highest prize in my sports career participating under the flag of Russia."

But Nourullo Loiqov, the head of Tajikistan’s Judo Federation, visited Moscow earlier this month and put into motion the events which have now led to  Boqiyev declaring his loyalty to his home country.

Alimahmad Mirzoyev, the deputy head of the Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs, then persuaded Boqiyev to return home.

Mirzoyev said: "In the course of negotiations, we found a common language and Rasoul flew to Moscow to solve some issues.

"We came to an agreement that Rasoul Boqiyev will participate in the London 2012 Olympics under the flag of Tajikistan."
