September 11 - Hollie Avil been crowned World Under-23 Triathlon Champion as British women dominated the race on Australia's Gold Coast with team-mate Jodie Stimpson taking the silver medal.

Avil, a 19-year-old from Northamptonshire, finished one second ahead of Stimpson with Canada's Paula Findlay taking bronze in front of another British athlete, Vicky Holland.

Avil and Stimpson broke away from the leading pack with 2.5 kilometres to go of the run and on the final lap of this morning's race, Avil made her move to take gold while Stimpson held off the challenge of Findlay.

It completed a notable double for Avil, who had won the world junior title in Copenhagen in 2007.

Avil said: "When you win a race like that, working hard and really pushing the bike for the whole 40km and then getting off and nailing 10km of running, it feels great.

"With three of us in the top four it just proves how much talent there is coming through and how well our world-class programme is working.

"You can't really ask for much more.

"With one junior world title, and now an Under-23 world title, I guess the senior one comes next, but that might take a few years."

Stimpson, a 20-year-old from Oldbury in the West Midlands, revealed she had learned from her mistakes in the World Championship Series race in London last month, where she faded after a strong start.

She said: "I knew my tactics had to be slightly different to the race in London, where I hit a brick wall on the run, and I didn't want it to happen today.

"To get second to Hollie is great, the best girl won on the day and congratulations to her."

In the men’s race Germany continued their run of triathlon success as Franz Löschke stormed to the title at ahead of home favourite James Seear and Portugal’s Joao Pereira.
