September 3 - Britain's women's handball team have warmed up for their forthcoming European Championship clashes with Finland later this month with a successful training camp and tournament in Italy in which Warrington's Holly Lam-Moores (pictured) finished as the top scorer.

The team played four matches in the mini tournament against top Italian and Austrian club sides, and were narrowly beaten in the final after a strong performance from many of the squad.

Jesper Holmris, Britain's head coach, said: “It was a great chance for us to prepare for the European Championship qualification matches against Finland in three weeks, and it was also a great opportunity to play against a different style of handball.”

Britain opened with a match against Cassano, who had stepped in at the last minute following the withdrawal of a Hungarian side.

Britain won comfortably 30-17, with a strong defence giving the wingers plenty of scoring opportunities which they took, with 17 fast-break goals.

The second match pitted Britain against Salerno, who are tipped to challenge for the Italian League title this season, having signed several international players.

Salerno won 22-15, but new Britain players Shila Casey and former Talent ID players Kathryn Fudge and Louise Jukes all had strong performances.

Britain took on MGA Wien, Austria's fourth-ranked team in the in the
semi-final, and battled to a superb 23-16 victory.

The of the game was goalkeeper Sarah Hargreaves, who had an outstanding save ratio of 63 per cent.

Lam-Moores was also in good form, as were Nina Heglund and Fudge (pictured).

The final that afternoon was against Salerno again, and despite a strong defence and good overall performance they lost out 22-27.

Lam Moores top scored with seven goals, while Bolton goalkeeper Cerys Walker was also in form as was Marie Merry, while Dani Sposi scored six goals.

Even without several key players Britain proved to be competing well with European club teams and two well deserved places on the All-Star team went to Moores on the left wing and Hargreaves in goal.

Holmris said: “Not only was it a great chance for us to prepare for the upcoming Finland matches.

"But it was perfect timing for strength and conditioning coach David Parker to evaluate the eight-week physical training programme and to test the players again.

“We didn’t know anything about the opponents but our perception of the club teams from Italy, Hungary and Austria prior to the camp was that they would be at a good level.

“Once again a great opportunity to play against a different style of handball and a good experience to take part in a competitive event only three weeks before the big fight against Finland.”

The camp was hosted by SSV Brixen, the Italian side who are the new club of Britain's captain Lynn McCafferty.

Overall, Moores was top-scorer with 21, while London-based Sposi added 12 and Aldershot’s Kelsi Fairbrother 10.

Fudge and Denmark-based Casey both scored nine.
