altTHE athletics career of Dwain Chambers (pictured), the sprinter who helped launch London's Olympic bid in 2002, could be at an end after he was handed a contract to play American football.

The sprinter will join NFL Europa side Hamburg Sea Devils after impressing at a national training camp in Tampa, Florida.

Chambers, who served a two-year ban for using the steroid THG, had missed the indoor season to pursue a career in American football and is looking forward to the new challenge.

"I am very happy to be allowed to play for Hamburg Sea Devils," he said on the team's official website.

"I have had the luck to be coached by one of the most experienced coaching staff.

"The understanding with my English colleagues Scott McCready, Aden Durde and Jermaine Allen, helped me a lot during the camp."

The 28-year-old did return to athletics last year, reaching the 100 metres final and being part of the winning 4x100 relay team at the European Championships in Gothenburg.

However, under the terms of his return, Chambers had to repay any earnings he had gained during the 18-month period when he was using steroids.

He began his attempts to break into the NFL last year at a training camp in Cologne.

A further two-day selection phase in Barcelona followed in mid-January, leading to him winning a place at the training camp in Tampa.

Chambers could make his debut for the Sea Devils in their opening fixture of the new season against the Cologne Centurions next month.
