altJUNE 14 – BRITAIN’S fledging men’s Olympic volleyball team has completed its first summer training camp in Glasgow, which marked the start of British Volleyball’s intensive six-year plan to prepare for the 2012 Games.

Britain’s indoor team has never competed in an Olympic Games but as hosts they qualify automatically for London.

Andy Sinclair, who plays professional volleyball for top Swedish club Hylte, was named captain at the end of the six-day programme. He will take charge of the summer programme, culminating with friendly matches against Australia in August.

“The theme of the camp was to establish the basic team systems for attack and defence, side out and transition, to enable us to properly practice - we achieved that,” said Thomas Dowens, interim manager of the men’s GB programme.

“We also wanted to have a long look at the players and map out the immediate future’s work. The bonus was that we also got to see the level of ambition and commitment to the Olympic dream the players have and it was impressive.”

The sport is also due to begin advertising within the next two weeks for four key full-time positions with a view to having these appointments in place by October.

The positions being advertised are: Head Coaches for Men, Women and Beach Programmes as well as a Programme Manager who will provide operational support for the three programmes.
