altBRITAIN'S Euan Burton claimed a bronze medal in the -81kg weight category at the European Judo Championships in Belgrade today.

Burton, a 28-year-old from Edinburgh, who also won bronze in 2005, beat Slovenia's Klemen Ferjan by the maximum ippon score in the fight for the bronze medal.

But Edinburgh club-mate and 2006 European champion Sarah Clark lost her bronze-medal match to Claudia Heill of Austria in the -63kg category.

The four-day tournament was the first qualifying event for the 2008 Olympics.

Britain's world champion Craig Fallon was unable to defend his European crown after dropping out of the team because of a shoulder problem.

Karina Bryant was also forced to miss the event because of a similar injury.
