altJune 15 - Britain's European silver medallists Anthony Clark and Nathan Robertson scored the best win of their career today when they lifted the men's doubles title at the Aviva Singapore Open.

In the final they defeated world champions and Olympic gold medallists Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.

But it was more than manner of the victory which was astonishing, as Nottingham-born Robertson and Derby-born Clark crushed the Indonesian pair 21-12 21-11 in just 26 minutes in a contest where the English champions were always ahead.

It is their first Super Series title together and their first international victory since reviving a partnership which previously brought that a silver medal at the Europeans in 2004.

Since their Olympic triumph last summer Kido and Setiawan have won the China Masters, Denmark and French Open and the Asian Games and are the dominant force in men's doubles - at least until they ran into Robertson and Clark in this kind of form.

The unseeded England pair, who are ranked number 19 in the world, built on a 17-10 lead to take the first game on their fourth game point and were just as dominant in the second to clinch victory on their third match point.

Robertson said: “We just played our best game today.

"It was close to perfect as I think we made just two errors in the whole match.

"I don't think anyone will underestimate us any more after this.

"It feels fantastic.”

On the way to the title the Nottinghamshire double act had to survive two three-game contests in the first two rounds, crucially beating third-seeded Malaysians Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong 13-21 21-19 21-14 to reach the quarter-finals.

But in their remaining three matches they did not drop a game as they hit top form.

Now Robertson, 32 last month, and Clark, 32 in November, head for next week's Indonesian Open in buoyant mood as they look to overhaul England's highest-ranked pair of Robert Blair and Chris Adcock, who are at number 14, and close in on a place in the world's top 10.
