MontenegrowaterPolo April_12April 13 - Montenegro (pictured left), Spain, Greece and Romania have all secured a spot at the London 2012 Olympic men's water polo event after the quartet made the last four at the qualification tournament held in Edmonton, Canada.


Montenegro won the competition by beating Spain 12-9 in a thrilling final match while Greece took the bronze as they triumphed 14-10 over Romania, although all four had already booked their place at the Olympic Games by reaching the semi-finals earlier in the week.

As top scorer at the competition with 21 goals, Cosmin Radu (pictured below, front) of Romania proved that he will be a major player the London 2012 Olympics.

He was followed by Ioannis Fountoulis of Greece and Felipe Perrone of Spain, who both scored 18, while Montenegro's Aleksandar Ivovic and Mladan Janovic both scored 17 goals to help steer their side to the gold medal.

Hosts Canada finished in fifth place, which was not good enough to secure qualification for the Olympics.

Macedonia took sixth place, Turkey seventh and Brazil, who will host the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, took eighth.

Outside of the quarterfinals, Argentina, Germany and Netherlands completed the list of teams competing in the qualification tournament.

The four nations that qualified for London 2012 in Edmonton will be joined by eight teams at the men's water polo Olympic tournament.

The first four are world champions Italy, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary who qualify as they are the four best ranked teams from the 2011 FINA World Championships.

Australia, Kazakhstan and the United States have also booked their London berths through respective continental championships.

Britain take the remaining spot by virtue of being the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games hosts.

The women's water polo qualification tournament will take place in Trieste, Italy, from April 15 until 22.

The top four finishing teams will be selected from the event and will be added to the four already qualified nations - US, Italy, Australia and China - for the Olympic Games.

The group draw for the 12 men's teams and eight women's teams at the Olympic Games tournament will be held on May 5 in London, during the water polo test event on the Olympic Park, which will take place between May 3 and 6.
