Though world silver medallist Gandy, who also qualified with a British record time for the 100m butterfly earlier this week, raced into the lead, Lowe put her under pressure in the final stages but had to settle for silver.

"It felt really relaxed and controlled," said Gandy after recording a time of 2min 06:01sec.

"Then I think all of the pressure and nerves got to me on that last 100 and I tightened up.

"It's just mistakes you learn from and I'll go back and analyse it and make sure it doesn't happen at the Olympics.

"Even though the pacing wasn't what I wanted it to be, I was able to defend my title and get to the Olympic Games in my main event so I couldn't be happier."

Jessica Dickons took third, whilst Andrew Willis secured the title in the men's 200m breaststroke in style.

He overtook Michael Jamieson in the final 50m of the race to win in a time of 2:09.33, two seconds inside the Olympic qualifying standard.

"It was a really competitive race," said Willis.

"I just gave everything in the last 50m, I wasn't expecting to be that quick.

"My coach said 'just go for it' and I went for it."

Jamieson also qualified for the Olympics whilst Kris Gilchrist took bronze.


Commonwealth Games silver medallist Simon Burnett (pictured) took gold in the men's 100m freestyle ahead of James Disney-May and Craig Gibbons, whilst Adam Brown came fourth to take the last Olympic 4x100m freestyle relay spot.

"I was very happy with that," Burnett said.

"I knew it was going to be a real tough one as it always is.

"The quality of freestyle has come along so much.

"At the end I wasn't feeling much, everything was just dead."
