Russia v_Poland_volleyball_World_Cup_December_4_2011December 5 - Russia won the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Cup in Tokyo, booking their place at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the process, alongside Poland and Brazil, the silver and bronze medallists respectively.

It was the Russians' sixth success in the competition but their first win since 1999.

They beat Poland over five sets as the runners-up claimed their second silver medal in history, their last having come 46 years ago in 1965.

Russia scored eight of the final nine points in the final set of their clash to wrap it up 17-15, having won the previous sets 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 and 17-25.

Denis Biryukov struck 13 points whilst Dmitriy Muserskiy got 12 to be named the most impressive player of the match.

Russia coach Vladimir Alekno said: "My congratulations to Poland for their qualification for the Olympics, they got what they came here for.

"I am the happiest person on Earth today because it is my 45th birthday.

"I have to thank my team for the efforts in this tournament."

Poland coach Andrea Anastasi added: "We have played an incredible tournament.

"With only six months of work we have finished second in the World Cup.

"We had to play good to reach this position, but we must do more to reach the top level.

"We still must work harder in the future".

The final Olympic spot went to Brazil, who needed to avoid conceding two sets to pip Italy, and did just that with victory over Japan came in straight sets.

As a result, Italy's four set victory over Iran was in vain.
