Sarah Stevenson_27-10-11October 28 - Sarah Stevenson (pictured), Great Britain's world welterweight taekwondo champion, has announced that she has lost her mother, Diana, to cancer, just three months after her father, Roy, died of a brain tumour.

Both parents were 63.

Stevenson, 28, was present with other family members at the bedside when her mother died at St John's Hospice on Tuesday (October 25).

"It is the saddest day of my life," said the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist.

Stevenson, who won her latest world title in South Korea last May, released the following statement: "My mum, Diana, passed away this afternoon after a very brave and determined battle with cancer.

"Her family were at her bedside at the St John's Hospice in Doncaster where she spent her last couple of days.

"She has shown amazing strength over this past year but now she has no more pain and is reunited with my dad Roy, her soul mate.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has supported my family through this very difficult time, particularly staff at St John's and the Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital.

"I would also really like to thank my friends and family who have been amazing, and all the staff and athletes at GB Taekwondo.

"I am sure you will now respect our privacy over the coming weeks."

Stevenson's mother had been diagnosed with terminal cancer in January, and her father was also very ill by that time.

After winning her latest world title, Stevenson commented: "I don't know how I won the World Championships with all that going on, but I was there for mum and dad and that was the most important thing."

She added: "Mum and dad always wanted me to do well and to go to the London Olympics and I've just got to do it and do well."
