Kristin Thomas_in_BeijingOctober 18 - Surrey is to host the United States cycling team as they finalise their preparations for the London 2012 Olympics.

The Olympic road cycle races and time trial events will both take place in Surrey during the Games.

Australia's road race have already agreed a deal to train in the county next year.

USA Cycling vice-president of athletics Jim Miller said: "We are thankful for the opportunity to operate out of Surrey pre-Olympics.

"Surrey offers an unmatched combination of infrastructure and location that is ideal for our preparations for one of the biggest days in sport."

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's cabinet member for community services and the 2012 Games, said: "It's a real honour for Surrey to host athletes from a country with as strong a sporting pedigree as the USA.

"I'm sure Surrey will give them a welcome they will never forget.

"I hope their presence will encourage even more people to take up the sport."

At the last Olympics in Beijing America's Levi Leipheimer won a bronze medal in the time trial behind Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara.

At Athens in 2004 Tyler Hamilton won the gold medal in the time trial and Bobby Julich the bronze.

But Hamilton later returned his medal to the International Olympic Committee having admitted he was using banned performance-enhancing drugs, although he has not been officially stripped of the title.

At Sydney in 2000 Lance Armstrong had claimed a bronze in the time trial.

On the women's side, Kristin Armstrong claimed victory in the time trial in Beijing, denying Britain's Emma Pooley the gold medal.
