The ban had been put in place after an investigation by the country's Ministry of Sport into the board of the Thai Basketball Association (BAT), which led to a new group being set up to run Thai basketball in its place.

The BAT then contested this decision, leading to the FIBA suspension, but a special congress held this weekend in Bangkok led to the creation of a new national federation as well as electing a new Board headed by President Surasak Chinawongwatana.

The congress was held in the presence of FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and 97 clubs agreed to the creation of the new body.

The South East Asian Games take place in Jakarta and Palembang between November 11 and 22.
