Koji_Murofushi_05-09-11September 5 - Koji Murofushi, who won the hammer event here for Japan at the age of 36, seven years after taking the Olympic title at the Athens Games, has been awarded the International Fair Play Award for the 2011 World Athletics Championships, which have just concluded.

He dedicated his title to those who had suffered from the earthquake and tsunami in the Tohoku region earlier this year, which killed nearly 16,000 people.

Murofushi, who won the World title with his season's best throw of 81.24 metres, had already returned home to Japan, and so the trophy was accepted on his behalf by Susumu Takano, head coach of the National Team of Japan.

"The people of the Tohoku region of Japan suffered so much after the earthquake and tsunami," Murofushi said.

"So many people lost their homes, lives, and loved ones, but continue to live with a spirit as strong as ever.

"They inspired me so much during my recent visit.

"I want to dedicate this award to them.

"I believe that my mission is to encourage them and keep reaching out to the people.

"Thank you."
