british_youth_team_relay_27-06-11June 26 - Britain's Alistair Brownlee's gold-medal winning performance in the European Triathlon Championships at Pontevedra has been emulated by four of his junior colleagues, who claimed victory in the concluding team relay event.

Maddy Winzer, Cameron Milne, Lucy Hall and Marc Austin dominated a competition which involved each athlete completing a 300 metres swim, eight kilometre bike ride and a two kilometre run before tagging their waiting teammate.

Winzer kept Britain in a challenging position after the first leg as Germany took the initial lead - no surprise given they had the individual male and female junior champions.

However, Hungary took over the lead in the next leg, with Milne putting in an impressive bike leg to move the British team up to third.

Hall was next up and exited the water first.

She maintained the lead and handed over to Austin for the final leg with a healthy lead, which was never relinquished.

Austin had time to grab a union flag and enjoy crossing the finishing line ahead of the German team.

Belgium won bronze.

Hall said: "This is a bonus because we've all done really well in our individual events.

"To win it in our first European juniors is a boost.

"Cam [Milne] had an amazing leg and got me into a really good position.

"I wanted to get as much lead as possible for Marc [Austin]."

Austin added: "I didn't want to let them down.

"I was just smashing it the whole way.

"I thought about crossing the line first and that gave me a big boost.

"It's amazing."

It is hoped that the relay format will feature as an Olympic event at senior level in 2016.

Relay events are well established at youth and junior level, with many of Britain's successful senior internationals having featured in winning European relay events.

Milne said: "It would be a great event for the Olympics because you never know what's going to happen.

"It's really unpredictable, so it's a great event to watch."

The GE Great Britain team is expected to field a senior relay team at the Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Series Lausanne in August.
