British_WK4_canoe_win_in_Duisburg_May_29_2011May 29 - Britain's women followed up their superb performance in the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Sprint World Cup in the Czech Republic last weekend as Abigail Edmonds, Hayleigh Mason, Jessica Walker and Louisa Sawers took gold in the K4 500 metres in the latest round in Duisburg.

Edmonds said: "I'm feeling exhilarated, it was really good – the weather here pretty much mirrors the conditions at Dorney lake so we were well prepared.

"We are filled with confidence after our silver last weekend and now gold we are really excited about the Euro's in three weeks."

But Walker missed out on a podium place as she came fifth in the K1 200m final, finishing less than a second off Lisa Carrington, who claimed gold for New Zealand.

Lani Belcher and Angela Hannah also agonisingly missed out on the top three when they came fourth in the K2 500m final, whilst Rachel Cawthorn came in the same position in the K1 500m.

Despite the near misses, it was another impressive weekend for the British women on the back of their success in last week's event in Racice, where they claimed medals in every race they took part in.

John Anderson, Britain's performance director, said: "It's been a good series of races for the GB canoeing sprint team; it's still early in the season but I think our athletes put down some really good performances in a number of classes.

"We have had some good success and some great medal results, gaining a lot of experience, although there is still a lot of work to be done and we are not going to get ahead of ourselves.

"Looking across the Olympic events I would say we are absolutely where we would like to be in six of the twelve events, which is a good position to be in – there are a number of Olympic events that we are still looking to move forward in and make a mark."

Head coach Brendan Purcell added : "The win in the Women's K4 was unreal, there was a little bit of luck in that race, but they were always going to be in the medals it was just about what colour.

"Hopefully their performance will help them to continue to build now into the major championships."
