Igor_Shuvalov_visits_KazanMay 23 - The 2013 World University Games will take place from July 6 to July 17 in Russian city Kazan, the Organising Committee announced today.


Russian first Deputy Prime Minister and the Organising Committee's chairman Igor Shuvalov (pictured) announced the decision during a visit to Kazan, Russia's eighth most populous city.

The dates still have to be officially confirmed by the Federation International du Sport Universitaire (FISU), but that is expected to be a formality.

There are due to be 26 events in the 2013 Summer Universiade with a total of 341 medals.

More than 10,000 athletes and officials are expected to attend the Games.  

During his visit to Kazan, Shuvalov has visited the construction site of the Kazan's new international airport, the Athletes Village and the future competitions venues.

Kazan, the regional capital of Russia's Tatarstan Republic, was the economic and cultural center in the middle reaches of the Volga river.

The 4,000-year-old city bid for the 2011 Universiade, but lost to China's Shenzhen by four votes.
