The first new venue for the Barranquilla 2027 Pan American Games, due to host mountain biking, is around 60 per cent complete.

Barranquilla's Mayor Jaime Pumarejo Heins and members of the local Government visited the 5.4-kilometre track in Miramar's Urban Forest.

Then Mayor's Office reported that 60 per cent of the work required for the cross-country track has been completed.

It is planned for the track to be made available to the local community and visitors.

The track is set to form part of a wider 30-hectare development including 4km of pedestrian trails and a camping and picnic area.

However, Barranquilla's head of district special projects Daniel Trujillo has admitted local Government is exploring ways to save costs in preparation for the Games, after a meeting between Pumarejo Heins and Colombia's Minister of Sports Astrid Rodríguez.

"We have had additional meetings with the technical team of the Ministry where we have sat down to review the tasks that were set out during that meeting and review possible alternatives to see how we can make these games a totally austere event, without affecting their development," Trujillo said.

Barranquilla was the only candidate to stage the 2027 edition of the Pan American Games when it was awarded hosting rights in 2021.

It previously hosted the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Chile's capital Santiago is due to stage this year's Pan American and Parapan American Games.
