Europe Ecology - The Greens Deputy Sabrina Sebaihi is set to play a leading role on the Commission as either rapporteur or President, examining gender-based and sexual violence, discrimination and corruption within National Federations.

Up to 30 Deputies could serve on the Committee in proportion to National Assembly political groups, and it expected to be addressed by Ministers, leaders of governing bodies and athletes starting next month.

More than one year of infighting at the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) culminated in the shock resignation of President Brigitte Henriques last month.

Scandals have also hit French football, rugby, handball and gymnastics in recent months, prompting Sebaihi to announce the creation of the Commission.

"This Commission of Inquiry aims to transform the sports movement by bringing to light the serious dysfunctions that are taking place there," she said, as reported by TF1.

"Our priorities will be to put an end to the omerta around sexual and gender-based violence in certain Federations.

"To identify the most transparent and ethical governance mechanisms in order to put an end to the current biases of corruption.

"And allow a real fight against racism, discrimination and homophobia.

"Sport must become a sanctuary for those who practice it."

The Commission is aiming to conduct a six-month investigation before reporting to the National Assembly, with a view to creating a law on the regulation of sports federations.

Sebaihi's plans follow the creation of a National Committee on ethics in sport by French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra in response to the various crises.

Noël Le Graët resigned as head of the French Football Federation in February following the launch of an investigation into accusations of sexual harassment and sexism as well as a scathing report commissioned by Oudéa-Castéra.

French Rugby Federation President Bernard Laporte resigned in the year the country is due to host the men's Rugby World Cup, after being convicted of corruption charges, while Ligue Nationale de Handball President Bruno Martini stepped down after receiving a one-year suspended prison sentence for corruption of a minor and recording of child pornography images.

Men's gymnastics team head coach Vitaly Marinitch has also been laid off this year because of alcohol-related "inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour".

France is a little more than one year out from staging its first Summer Olympics for 100 years, with the Games set to start on July 26 2024 in Paris.

Oudéa-Castéra has urged the CNOSF to finalise a successor to Henriques as soon as possible to ensure Paris 2024 preparations remain on track.
