The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Council has extended its ban on spin serves until after the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on September 8 next year.

The governing body consulted with stakeholders in the sport and decided it was best to prevent the technique for an additional 15 months.

This is so as to not impact the Olympic and Qualifying periods and the Games themselves.

BWF secretary general Thomas Lund stated that "BWF welcomed innovation in badminton" but added that "more evidence was needed on the potential effects" of the serve before introducing it full scale.

The ban was initially implemented on an interim basis on May 12 and was due to end today before the extension was enforced.

The BWF Laws of Badminton have been amended to show the change, reading "the server shall release the shuttle without adding spin, and the server's racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle."

Failing to adhere to the law will result in a fault being called.

The Sudirman Cup Finals earlier this month was the first event to be held under the rule change.

The spin serve was first seen at the Polish Open in March.

"BWF welcomes players creating innovation in our game and experimenting with techniques to create competitive advantage on court," said BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer.

"However, we have received several points of feedback from within the badminton community, including the BWF Athletes' Commission, expressing that this ‘spin serve’ could have a negative impact on the game.

"It's also been observed internally that this 'spin serve' has many similar characteristics to the 'Sidek serve', which is not allowed."

A panel of experts was enlisted to examine the serve before it recommended that the move was disallowed.
