International Canoe Federation (ICF) President Thomas Konietzko has praised Silkeborg's "focus on sustainability" after the Danish city was awarded the 2027 Canoe Marathon World Championships.

Vejen is due to host this year's edition of the Canoe Marathon World Championships, and Denmark was again awarded hosting rights for 2027 in Silkeborg at the ICF Board meeting in Hungary's capital Budapest.

Silkeborg held the Canoe Marathon European Championships last year, and beat competition from Hungary, Romania and The Netherlands to secure the 2027 World Championships.

German official Konietzko claimed the ICF was impressed by the bid's focus on sustainability.

Silkeborg, situated on the Gudenå River in the hilly and lush landscape of Søhøjlandet, surrounded by Denmark's largest forest district and a great number of lakes, is known as Denmark's "outdoor capital".

"It was the best presentation of the day," Konietzko said.

"Fantastic presentation on a very high level.

"You are committed friends of our sport.

"It gave us great joy to see the focus on sustainability for instance the idea of bicycles for the participants."

"We love to create the perfect environment for our world-class athletes," he commented.

"When we also promote Danish values such as sustainability and innovation while strengthening canoeing, it is perfect.

"Today is a good day for Danish and international canoe sport."
