The Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games Organising Committee has entered a collaboration agreement with the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV) in Chile.

Both parties are set to work on organising academic activities as part of the agreement, with the university's students to take part in the volunteering programme for the Games.

PUCV rector Nelson Vásquez stressed the importance of the Pan American and Parapan American Games for Chile, which is set to host both multi-sport events for the first time later this year.

"Our university is about to celebrate its 95th anniversary," Vásquez commented.

"It is a great responsibility for us to participate in events of this type, because we have a great public vocation and the countries that have organised Games like these have been able to solve their challenges because civil society is organised around the event.

"When the state of Chile committed to developing these Games, it was not only the Government that took up the challenge, but the entire Chilean society."

Vásquez and Santiago 2023 director of sports operations Gustavo San Martín were among those present at the PUCV's Centre for Advanced Studies in the Valparaíso region to the north of the Chilean capital.

Santiago 2023 recognised the efforts of the university's women's 3x3 basketball team which triumphed at last year's International University Sports Federation America Championship.

PUCV is the latest higher educational institution that the Organising Committee has entered an agreement with, following on from similar deals struck with the University for Development and Los Leones Professional Institute earlier this month.

The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games is set to take place from October 20 to November 5, while the Parapan American Games is scheduled to be held from November 17 to 26.
