The Village is located on the campus of Chengdu University, and is currently being used by its students, but will be in the hands of Chengdu 2021 organisers before competition gets underway on July 28.

"Since 2019, we have seen much improvement, and for us this is important because we are not only talking of the 15 days of the Games but of their legacy," said Saintrond.

"So all the Village’s installations and equipment are ultimately for the students of Chengdu.

"I’m impressed by many things: all the services are very close from each other, the transportation network works very well, the facilities are all perfect.

"This is one of the best Villages we ever had."

The Athletes Village is able to accommodate 11,000 people in 6,600 single and twin bed rooms and is divided into four sectors - the residential zone, operational zone, international zone and transportation zone.

It features a dining room that can seat up to 4,340 people, and that will operate 20 hours per day.

As well as the rooms for student-athletes, the Village features delegation apartments, a delegation services centre, an operations centre, a polyclinic and sports facilities including an Olympic sized swimming pool, basketball courts, track and field grounds and a fitness centre.

During the Games a series of cultural activities are due to be held in the Village, including the planting of trees in the Friendship Forest, interactive experience events and art exhibitions.

About 15,000 athletes are set to compete across 18 sports at the Games, scheduled to be staged from July 28 to August 8.

The event was originally due to be held in 2021 only to be postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions in China.

Competitions are expected to be held in 45 different venues, including 13 that have been built for the Games.
