Hosts China enjoyed success on the first day of medal events at the delayed 2022 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series Final in Wuxi, earning golds through Zuo Ju and Song Jie.

World Championships silver medallist at under-53 kilograms Zou emerged victorious in the women's under-49kg event at the Wuxi Taihu International Expo Centre, overcoming Olympic runner-up Adriana Cerezo of Spain by winning the two rounds 7-3 and 11-7.

Guo Qing, who took silver at under-49kg at the World Championships in Guadalajara, earned bronze at the expense of Israel's Abishag Semberg.

China won the other women's gold medal on offer today too thanks to 12-2 and 8-5 wins for Song in her two rounds against Spain's Cecilia Castro, with Zhang Mengyu triumphing in the all-Chinese bronze medal match against Xing Jiani.

Olympic champion Ulugbek Rashitov of Uzbekistan came from behind to win a dramatic gold against Danial Bozorgishoob of Iran in the men's under-68kg.

Rashitov trailed 5-1 with just 10 seconds remaining in a final round decider, but a sensational late flurry allowed him to level at 6-6 and win by final score.

Reza Kalhor of Iran clinched bronze against Kang Jae-gwon.

Iran’s Arian Salimi won the other gold medal of the day in the men's over-80kg, dominating Turkey's Emre Kutalmış Ateşli in the final.

Bronze went to Kang Sang-hyun of South Korea against Song Zhaoxiang of China.

The World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series Final is set to conclude tomorrow with competition in the women's under-57kg and over-67kg, and the men's under-58kg and under-80kg.

The fourth edition of this event was originally due to be held last year, only to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
