Moscow-born Sarana was competing under the International Chess Federation (FIDE) flag as a neutral at the Hotel Zepter due to sanctions against Russia and Belarus in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

He was level on 8.5 points with Romanian Kirill Shevchenko and Belgium's Daniel Dardha after 11 rounds.

The trio could be separated after the first tiebreaker but a second put Sarana in the lead with 73 points, ahead of Shevchenko's 70 and Dardha on 66.5 using the Buchholz Score.

The Buchholz Score is the sum of their opponent's wins which gives a difficulty ranking of rivals faced.

As a result, the undefeated Sarana takes home the grand prize of €20,000 (£17,600/$21,400) while second and third go home with €15,000 (£13,200/$16,000) and €10,000 (£8,800/$10,700).

Sarana and Shevchenko went head-to-head in a blockbuster final-round but the pair could not be separated as they played out a draw.

Turkey's Ediz Gürel was the breakout star of the tournament.

The 14-year-old finished 14th overall, with 8 points and 65.5 on the tiebreak, and won €1,500 (£1,300/$1,600) as a result.
